Sept. 13, 2006 - Cape Neddick Residents
Canon 5D, 70 - 300 mm @ 300 mm, f/8.0, 1/160 sec., ISO 400, June, 2006
This image is one of those "grab shots" that you take and then wind up liking for reasons that are hard to explain. I was waiting for the light to change on the Nubble light and had been fooling around with a 70 - 300 mm telephoto lens (trying to get "close" to some fishermen). These two guys suddenly appeared on a nearby rock and seemed to want to pose (or, more likely, were looking for food). The sun peeked through some clouds behind me, lighting up the rocks and water at the base of the lighthouse. I focused on the gulls and fired off a few shots. It's not an image that I'm going to hang on a wall, but I do like it. Maybe it's because it reminds me of a previous visit (some years back in the middle of January) when my wife and I saw two other gulls shivering in about the same location. Each of them actually had an icicle hanging from the tip of their beak!
