Sept. 14, 2006 - Sunset from Dyce's Head, Castine, Maine
Canon 10D, 17 - 40 mm @ 17 mm, f/8.0, 1/125 sec., ISO 100, Sept., 2004
Dyce's Head lighthouse (no longer operational) lies on the edge of the town of Castine overlooking Penobscot Bay. The coast is very rocky here and the light itself sits near the edge of a fairly steep cliff that goes down to the water. To get a decent view, you must follow a path down the cliff to reach an open area. My wife and I did this very carefully, hanging on to trees and rocks all the way down. We arrived just in time to see the sun slipping below the horizon. We were feeling pretty proud of ourselves. That is, until a young woman with a camera draped around her neck came bounding down the path, covering the same distance in a few seconds. After the "good light" faded, we slowly made our way back up the path, feeling very old.
