Nov.1 2006 - Hairy Woodpecker

Canon 5D, 300 mm f/2.8 IS with 2X Teleconverter, f/5.6, 1/400 sec., ISO 400, Oct. 2006

This little guy was making a heck of a racket creating a hole in this tree two days ago. I put a 300 mm lens - with a 2X converter - on the camera and managed to get 3 shots before he got spooked by my presence (I was about 30 ft. away). Given that I also cropped significantly, you get an appreciation for how much lens is needed for birds this size. If it is indeed a Hairy Woodpecker (I'm no expert), he's about the size of a robin.
