In few places is the ability of flowing water to alter the landscape more evident than at the base of a waterfall. If you happen to be at the base of this particular waterfall, for example, you just might hear or even see chunks of shale break off from the walls of the gorge. At the very least, you can scan the area and see large chunks of rock that have recently fallen. That's why I love this place - it's always transforming itself.

Photography in these places can be challenging. Just keeping yourself and your equipment dry is often difficult. On this day, in fact, the rains came shortly after this frame was taken. The walk back to my Jeep was soggy and cold. But I'll do it again the next time.
