As I've said before, Watkins Glen is one of my favorite places. The gorge is deep, spectacular and contains a large number of waterfalls. Here, Glen Creek continues the neverending process of cutting through shale, siltstone, and sandstone as it makes it's way to Seneca Lake. This view is just downstream from a very popular part of the gorge called Cavern Cascade. It's popular because one can stand behind the waterfall as it plunges about 30 feet to the pool below. You might get wet, but it's a lot of fun.
Much of the rock in this gorge is nearly 400 million years old and originally formed the bottom of an ancient sea. The gorge and the Finger Lakes are, of course, much more recent, having been created by the last glacier to pass through (some 15,000 years ago).
