Sept. 20, 2007 - Sunset in Zion Canyon
Canon 5D, 24 - 105 mm f/4L IS @ 40 mm, f/11, 1/30 sec., ISO 200
Whenever we visit Zion, I always hope for at least one day with clouds (especially around sunrise or sunset). My wife, on the other hand, would be just as happy if every day contained nothing but wall to wall blue sky. On this short trip, I got my wish on 1 of 3 days. Her wish was granted on the other two.
This sunset shot was actually taken outside of the park. I had climbed a hill on the eastern side of Springdale (the small town that serves as the gateway to Zion at the southern entrance) and was actually photographing the clouds away from the setting sun. But I was keeping my eye on the western horizon as well. These clouds turned red for just a minute or two, and then the sun was gone. Yes, I know that sunrises and sunsets are photographic cliches. I should be happy just to be there to witness nature's twice daily "show". But I can't help tripping the shutter. It's an addiction, I suppose.........
