In many ways, Las Vegas is not like other American cities. It was "born" in 1905, but the event that led to what Las Vegas is today occurred in 1931. In that year - during the Great Depression - Nevada became the only state to legalize gambling. The rest, as they say, is history.
I've read that since 1970, the number of visitors and the number of hotel rooms has doubled every 14 years. In 2005, the number of hotel rooms in Las Vegas (over 135,000) was roughly twice that of New York City. Today, the building continues.
Here you see the new Palazzo, which has it's "official" opening this month. Right next to it is Wynn. You can see the construction going on at Wynn's "twin" - Encore - just behind it. Not to mention MGM Mirage's City Center, set to open in 2009.
Have I mentioned that I live under one of the approaches to McCarran airport? They just keep coming and coming and coming........
