Nov, 3, 2008 - At the Edge
Tomorrow is election day here in the U.S. After roughly two years of what is arguably the greatest political show on earth, it will all come to an end (well, sort of). Millions of people will be thankful that it's over. The horrible TV ads will end, the daily "harassment" of potental voters will stop (in the so-called battleground states), and we will at long last know who W.'s successor will be. Personally, I'll be sorry to see the end of this amazing stretch of history. I've been watching presidential politics since I was in high school (Kennedy - Nixon), and with the possible exception of two of them (that first one and then the election of 1968, when RFK was assassinated), there has never been a cycle with more drama or more importance. Not to mention a healthy dose of some serious comedy.
I can only imagine the incredible hangover (the political kind, not the alcoholic version) that some of us will experience on Wednesday morning. No more daily polls, no more endless discussions on CNN and MSNBC, and no more giant electoral "red state", "blue state" maps. All we'll have is a brand new president facing all of the same old problems. Worse, what will SNL use for inspration once it's all over (unless, of course, the old guy and the winking hockey mom actually win this thing). The really good news on Wednesday might be that Joe the Plumber returns to obscurity - where he belongs.
