Home: Currently living near Rochester, NY.

While I've been interested in photography since I was a teeenager (a very long time ago), that interest began to grow into a passion over the last 10 years or so. It seems to me that there is no better way to learn about the world around us than to photograph it. The act of pointing the camera at a subject compels us, I think, to learn something, or something more, about what's in the frame.

To learn, one must explore. Of course, exploration doesn't necessarily require a lot of travel. Photographic opportunities are nearly limitless in our own backyards. But if you have that "travel itch" (like we do), then exploring new places can only enhance the opportunity to grow. Some of our favorite places include the Maine coast, Charleston, SC, the Outer Banks, and the wonderful national parks of the American southwest.

Any photograph is essentially "an image in time". When we point the camera at a subject, we are recording what that subject looked like at that particular moment in that particular light. For me, that alone defines the "meaning" of a photograph. I cannot say with any certainty why I am compelled to point the camera at one subject while ignoring another. I am certainly not conscious of any "message" that I want to convey with a photograph. Some things apparently stir my soul; others do not. If any of these images give someone else pleasure or a reason to reflect, so much the better.

Cameras

For better or worse, I've almost always used Canon equipment. After switching to digital about 4 years ago, I've had a D60, a 10D, and a 20D. I now use a Canon 5D. I have a fairly wide assortment of lenses, teleconverters, and filters. My current tripod is a Gitzo 1325 with an Arca Swiss B1 ballhead.

When travelling, I carry a Toshiba laptop, an Epson P2000, an external hardrive, and numerous CF cards. Given all this stuff, we travel exclusively "on the road". It's a good thing I love to drive!
